To a mixture of 4-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzaldehyde (10 g, 61 mmol) and potassium carbonate (13 g, 92 mmol) were added DMF (60 mL) and ethyl iodide (10 mL, 125 mmol) at room temperature and the mixture was stirred overnight at 70°C and at room temperature for 2 days. Water was added to the reaction solution and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed successively with 1N hydrochloric acid and saturated aqueous solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate, dried (MGS04), and filtered through a silica gel layer. The mother liquor was concentrated to give the title compound (12 g, yield 99%). H NMR (300 MHz, CDC13) 8 ppm : 1.53 (t, J = 7. 0 Hz, 3 H), 4.30 (q, J = 7.1 Hz, 2 H), 7.21 (d, J = 8.7 Hz, 1 H), 8.06 (DD, J = 8.7, 2.1 Hz, 1 H), 8.33 (d, J = 2. 1 Hz, 1 H), 9.93 (s, 1 H).
