Steps:

1 Step 1:4-methyIpiperidinc3-carboxy1ic acid
To a solution of 4-methylnicotinic acid (10.0 g, 73.0 mmoi) in Ac014 (200 mL) was added Pt02(1.0 g). The mixture was stirred at 25 °C under H2 atmosphere (50 psi) for 72 h and filteredthrough a short pad of Celite. The filtrate was concentrated to give the crude 4-methylpiperidine-3-carboxylic acid (10.0 g, 96% yield) as a colorless oil. This crude was used directly without further purification.
