A mixture of benzyl acetoacetate 4.6 g, 24 mmol) and ammonium acetate (9.2 g, 119.5 mmol) in methanol (30 mL) was allowed to stir at ambient temperature for 72 h. The solvent was evaporated, and the residue was taken up in CHCl₃/H₂O. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried (Na₂SO₄), and evaporated to give Example 2A (4.3 g, 90% yield) as a golden oil. ¹H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl₃) 1.91 (s, 3H), 4.60 (s, 1H), 5.12 (s, 2H), 7.24-7.40 (m, 5H).
