Example 1.1.4: (4-isopropylpyridin-2-yl)methanamine; To a stirring mixture of 5.1 g (14.3 mmol) of Ph3PCH3Br in 25 mL of THF at 0 0C was added 11.0 mL of n-BuLi (1.6M in hexanes) dropwise over a period of 20 min. After 1 h, 1.5 g (12.8 mmol) of l-(pyridin-4-yl)ethanone was added in 20 mL of THF. The mixture was stirred at 0 0C for 1 h and then at r.t for 50 min. The mixture was filtered through a Buchner funnel. Saturated NH4Cl and H2O were added, and the layers were separated. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated. Purification by flash silica gel chromatography (54% EtOAc/hexanes) provided the isopropenyl pyridine as a pale yellow liquid.
