Steps:
Ethyl oxo{ [3 -(trifluoromethyl)-phenyl] amino} acetate (8.04 g, 30.7 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (50 ml, 99.5%). To the stirred solution was added l-amino-2-propanol (racemic, 2.32 g, 31 mmol) in one portion, and the mixture was heated to reflux for 90 minutes. The mixture was allowed to cool and was evaporated to dryness, giving N-(2-hydroxypropyl)- N'-[3-(trifluoromethyl)-phenyl]ethanediamide (8.80 g, 99%) as a white solid. 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSOd6) δ 10.99 (bs, IH), 8.77 (t, J= 6.3 Hz, IH), 8.29 (s, IH),8.11 (d, J= 8.2 Hz, IH), 7.60 (t, J= 8.1 Hz, IH), 7.49 (d, J= 7.5 Hz, IH), 4.91 (d, J= 4.9 Hz, IH), 3.78 (p, J= 5.7 Hz, IH), 3.20-3.12 (m, 2H), 1.05 (d, J= 6.3 Hz, 3H);APCI-MS m/z: 273.1 [MH+- 18].
