EXAMPLE 43B 5-bromo-1,6-dimethyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-3-pyridinecarbonitrile A mixture of Example 43A (10.0 g, 46.9 mmol), cesium carbonate (15.3 g, 79.3 mmol) and methyl iodide (3.2 mL, 51.4 mmol) in DMF (100 mL) was heated to 70° C. for 1 hour, diluted with dichloromethane, washed with water, dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated. The concentrate was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel with 98:2 dichloromethane/ethyl acetate to provide 5.10 g (48%) of the desired product. MS (DCI/NH3) m/z: 244 (M+N)+; 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 8.40 (s, 1H), 3.57 (s, 3H), 2.60 (s, 3H).
