Step 2: (0578) 5-Acetylpicolinonitrile (146 mg, 1.0 mmol) in 5 mL of conc. HCl was heated at reflux for 2.5 h. The mixture was concentrated and dried in vacuo. The crude product 5-acetylpicolinic acid was used without further purification.
