Stage #1: 10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene-5-carbonitrilewith aluminum (III) chloride;lithium aluminium tetrahydride in diethyl ether at 20; for 8 h;Heating / reflux;
Stage #2: with water in diethyl ether;

A suspension OfLiAlH4 (360 mg) in Et2O (20 ml) was slowly treated with a solutionOfAlCl3 (950 mg) in Et2O (20 ml). The mixture was stirred at rt for 10 min and then the title compound from Step A above (1.03 g) was added within 5 min. The mixture was stirred at rt for 10 min and then refluxed for 8 h. After the addition OfH2O (20 ml) and 25% NH4OH (6 ml), the mixture was filtered and the salts washed with H2O (20 ml) and Et2O (10 ml). The organic phase was separated, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to afford the title compound (157 mg; 15 %; MH+ = 224).
