To a solution of 5-bromo-2-trifluoromethoxy benzoic acid (2.2 g, 1.0 equiv) in THF (80 mL) at 0° C. under an atmosphere of nitrogen was added dropwise a solution of borane-THF (1.0 M in THF, 19.3 mL, 2.5 equiv). The solution was heated at 70° C. for 18 hr and then allowed to cool to room temperature and concentrated. The residue was dissolved in methanol and the solvent evaporated (2×). The crude product was purified by column chromatography (SiO2, 20% EtOAc in hexane) to give the desired benzylic alcohol (1.45 g, 69%).
