A Dess-Martin reagent (1.04 g, 2.46 mmol) was added to a solution of (5-chloro-1-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)methanol (0.300 g, 2.05 mmol) in dichloromethane (20.0 mL) at 0° C. The reaction liquid was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The reaction liquid was filtered through Celite and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, n-hexane/ethyl acetate) to obtain 5-chloro-1-methyl-1H-imidazole-2-carbaldehyde (0.289 g, 2.00 mmol, 98%) as a white solid. (0157) ¹H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl₃) δ: 3.97 (3H, s), 7.24 (1H, s), 9.70 (1H, s).
