Reference Example 56 Preparation of 6-fluorobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid To a solution of the compound obtained in Reference Example 55 (6.10 g) in ethanol (60 ml) was added 2.5N sodium hydroxide (50 ml). The mixture was heated at reflux for 1 hour, concentrated, diluted with water, adjusted to pH 1 with 2N HCl, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and concentrated to give the titled compound as colorless crystals (5.27 g). 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6) δ: 7.35 (1H, dt, J=2.6, 9.0 Hz), 7.97 (1H, dd, J=9.6, 2.6 Hz), 8.05 (1H, dd, J=9.0, 5.4 Hz), 8.11 (1H, s). IR (KBr): 1524, 1256, 1200, 918, 806, 756, 527 cm-1.
