General procedure for the preparation of 4H-pyran:

General procedure: A mixture of an aldehyde (1 mmol), malononitrile (1 mmol), 1,3-diketo compound (1mmol) and nano ZnO (10 mol%) was stirred at room temperature in 5 ml ethanol-watermixture (1:1) . The progress of the reaction was monitored by TLC (EtOAc: Hexane=3:7). After completion of the reaction 10 ml ethanol was added to the reaction mixtureand filtered to remove ZnO. Upon concentrating the reaction mixture the desired product4crystallized out. As the purity of the product was high no further recrystallization wasrequired.The filtered nano ZnO was washed with ethanol and dried in vacuum for furtheruse.
