Step B. tert-bvdyl 2'-oxo-l'.4'-dihvdro-lH.2'H-spiro['piperidine-4.3'-quinolinel-l-carboxylate; A solution of 1-tert-butyl 4-ethyl 4-(2-aminobenzyl)ρiperidine-l,4-dicarboxylate (200 mg, 0.552 mmol) in acetic acid (5 mL) was heated at 70 0C for 1 h. The reaction was concentrated and the residue was partitioned between saturated aqueous NaHCO3 and dichloromethane, separated, the organic layer dried over MgSU4, and concentrated. The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with a gradient of 0 to 5% methanol : dichloromethane to give the title compound (73 mg). MS: mlz = 317.1 (M + 1).
