Preparation of 2-phenyl-4,6-dihydro-2H-thienor3,4-c1pyrazol-3-amine: A suspension of 4-oxotetrahydrothiophene-3-carbonitrile (1.00 g, 7.86 mmol) and phenylhydrazine hydrochloride (1.25 g, 8.65 mmol) in absolute EtOH (40 mL, 7.86 mmol) was refluxed for 2 hours. The mixture was concentrated and the residue was triturated with IN aqueous NaOH (40 mL). The solid was collected by filtration, washed sequentially with 0.1 N aqueous NaOH, water, and hexanes, then dried in vacuo to yield the product (1.62 g, 95% yield) as a white solid. MS (apci) m/z = 218.1.
