To a solution of (2-tert-butylphenyl) methanol (935 mg) in DMSO (20 mL) were added triethylamine (4.81 mL) and sulfur trioxide pyridine complex (3.02 g) . The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hr, water was added, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water and saturated brine, and dried overanhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane) to give the title compound (780 mg) .XH NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 1.46 (9H, s) , 7.36-7.44 (1H, m) , 7.49-7.62 (2H, m) , 7.80 (1H, dd, J = 7.6, 1.6 Hz), 10.74 (1H, s) .
