B. 3-Hydroxy-2-nitrobenzonitrile (1.31 g) was mixed with 10% Pd/C (131 mg) in a solvent mixture of ethanol (9 mL) and ethyl acetate (18 mL), and the reaction was stirred overnight under hydrogen atmosphere. Upon completion of the reaction, the catalyst was removed by filtration through diatomaceous earth and the filtrate was subsequently concentrated. The resulting residue was purified by column chromatography (eluent: hexane/ethyl acetate, 6/4) to give 2-amino-3-hydroxybenzonitrile (398 mg, 37% yield).
