EXAMPLE 57 Ethyl 6-bromo-5-cyanonicotinate (15) A mixture of 12 (1.4 g, 0.003 mol), AgNO3 (1.7 g, 0.01 mol), EtOH (25 mL) and H2 O (5 mL) was heated on a steam bath for 11/2 hours. After filtering off the yellow solid, the solution was concentrated to dryness to yield 0.6 g (79%) of 15. An analytical sample was prepared by crystallization from EtOH-H2 O mp 92°-93° C.; 1 H NMR (CDCl3) 1.35 δ (3H, t, J=7), 4.35 (2H, q, J=7), 8.7 (1H, d, J=3) and 8.8 (1H, d, J=3).
