General procedure: In a steel reactor, the considered a-amino ester (0.065 mol, either as a free base or as a hydrochloride) was dispersed in 7 N methanol ic ammonia (50 mL). This was heated at 70 °C for 16-19 hours, concentrated to dryness and the residue was purified as further described below.
