2-Aminopyrazine (0.2 mmol) and phenylpropynal (0.2 mmol) were used as raw materials in toluene (1 mL) and ferric chloride (5 mol%) was added as a catalyst. The reaction mixture was transferred to a 10 mL test tube fitted with a magnetic stir bar and the reaction was stirred at 60 °C for 18 hours. After completion of the reaction, water (5 mL) was added to the mixture and extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 5 mL). The organic phases were combined and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed by concentration under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by column chromatography to afford the target product imidazo[1,2-a]pyrazin-3-yl(phenyl)methanone.
