(R)-3-Hydroxybutyl-4-methylbenzenesulfonate (100.0 g, 0.41 mol) was diluted in toluene (1L) was added. Sodium (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate (51.6g, 0.41mol) at room temperature. Raise the temperature to 80-90 °C and react for 20-24 hours. TLC monitors the completion of the reaction. The reaction solution was cooled to room temperature and filtered with suction. The filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure. Add methyl tert-butyl ether (500 mL) to the residue, stir and filter with suction. The filtrate was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to obtain (R)-3-hydroxybutyryl-(R)-3-hydroxybutyl ester (65 g, yield: 90.0%, purity: 95%).
