Synthesis of 2-Alkylaminothiazole Derivatives 5 (GeneralProcedure)

General procedure: To a solution of alkylthiourea 3 (10 mmol)in ethanol (5 mL) was added α-haloketone 4 (10 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to reflux for 12 h, and cooled to room temperature. The solvent was removed by evaporation, and the residue was purified either by crystallization from ethyl acetate/diethyl ether or by flash chromatography (nhexane:ethyl acetate = 4:1) on silica gel to obtain the corresponding 2-alkylaminothiazole 5 (17-93% isolated yields).
