General procedure: To a mixture of 5-chlorosalicylic acid (1 mmol) and aniline derivative (1 mmol) in round bottom flask added 10 mL xylenes and heated to 120 ^oC. Then added PCl₃ (0.4 mmol) drop wise for 5 min, and then stirred it at 120 ^oC for 3-4 h. The reaction progress was monitored by thin layer chromatography (TLC) carried out on Merck silica-gel plates (0.25 mm thick, 60F254), visualized by UV (254 nm) light. After complete consumption of starting materials, brought it to 70 ^oC, quenched with water. White precipitated filtered and washed with water (20 mL, 70 ^oC)then washed with 10% ethanol in water obtained desired salicylanilide with >98% purity.
