Step 2A solution of an appropriate Z-protected nipecotamide derivative (1 mmol) in EtOAc (5 mL) was hydrogenated for 2 h at room temperature in a Schlenk flask in the presence of 10 % Pd- C (0.05 mmol Pd). The mixture was filtered through a plug of Celite and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. Products were used without further purification.Intermediate 7 (methyl nipecotamide): Yield 97 %. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 300 MHz): δ = 1.43- 1.59 (m, 1 H), 1.62-1.94 (m, 3 H), 2.39 (m, 1 H, -COCH[CH2J2), 2.81 (d, J = 4.9 Hz, 3 H, -NHCH3), 2.86 (m, 2 H), 2.95 (dd, J= 12.1 Hz, J = 3.7 Hz, 1 H), 3.04 (dd, J= 12.1 Hz, J = 5.6 Hz, 1 H), 7.32 (s, br., 1 H, NH); LC/(+)-ESIMS: m/z = 143 [M+H]+
