Quinalphos synthesis

Quinalphos is commercially produced via a two-step process: first, 2-chloroquinoxaline (synthesized from o-phenylenediamine and chloroacetic acid via cyclisation and chlorination) reacts with sodium hydroxide to form 2-hydroxyquinoxaline; this intermediate is then esterified with O,O-diethyl phosphorochloridothioate under basic conditions to yield the active O-(quinoxalin-2-yl) O,O-diethyl phosphorothioate. The technical-grade product is purified by vacuum distillation or crystallisation.
