General procedure: L-cystein(3.63 g, 30 mmol)was dissolved in a mixed solvent of water (50 mL) and EtOH (6 mL). Then the solution of corresponding aldehydes (1.0 equiv.) in EtOH (15 mL)was added. The mixture was stirred at 25 C for 6 h, filtered, washed with water, and dried to afford compounds 8-24. 2RS,4R)-2-phenyl-1,3-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid(8) White solid, 93% yield
