Step 1 : (5-Methyl-thiophen-2-yl)-methanolSodium borohydride (720 mg, 19.02 mmol) was added to a solution of 5-methyl- thiophene-2-carbaldehyde (2.0 g, 15.85 mmol) in a mixture of ethanol and toluene (1 : 1, 12 mL) at 0°C. The reaction mixture was stirred 2 hours at room temperature and then partitioned between water (15 mL) and ethyl acetate (15 mL). The aqueous layer was separated and extracted with ethyl acetate (2 x 30 mL). The combined organic phases were washed with a saturated solution of sodium chloride (20 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to dryness. The title product was obtained as a yellow oil (2.01 g, 99%).*H NMR (CDCI3, 400 MHz) : δ (ppm) : 6.79 (d, J = 2.8 Hz, 1H), 6.61 (d, J = 2.8 Hz, 1H), 4.73 (S, 2H), 2.47 (s, 3H).
