G Step G: tert-butyl N,N-bis(2-oxoethyl)carbamate
To a solution of tert-butyl 3,4-dihydroxypyrrolidine-1-carboxylate (45.0 g, 221 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (400 mL) and water (80 mL) was added sodium periodate (71.04 g, 332.1 mmol). The reaction stirred at 25 °C for 12 h. The reaction mixture was quenched by addition of saturated aqueous sodium sulfite (1000 mL) at 20 °C, and then extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 1000 mL). The combined organic fractions were washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride (3 x 1000 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated to afford tert-butyl N,N- bis(2-oxoethyl)carbamate (32 g, 71%) as a colorless oil which was used in the next step without further purification.
