The review of inositol

Definition

Inositol is a vitamin-like sugar alcohol that is commonly found in human tissues and many foods. Inositol is sometimes referred to as a B vitamin, but strictly speaking, it is not a vitamin because our cells are able to produce sufficient amounts of inositol on their own. However, it does work with several B vitamins (pyridoxine – B6, folic acid – B9, pantothenic acid – B5). Inositol is a water-soluble compound and a member of the B vitamin group. It is an important part of the cell membrane structure. The picture 1 shows a bag of Inositol powders.

Mental Health Benefits of Inositol

Since inositol plays a role in the transmission of chemical messengers in the brain, it may have an effect on mood. Multiple studies have concluded that people with depressed mood have lower levels of inositol in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, leading to further research into inositol and mental health. While research has shown a relationship between improved mood and inositol levels, individuals need to discuss inositol as a possible treatment option with their doctor. Inositol plays an important role in nervous system function, promotes nervous system health, helps improve mental fitness and performance, and improves concentration.

Other Benefits of Inositol

Inositol's role in mental health has been extensively studied, and it has several lesser-known potential benefits, including effects on the body's metabolism. It may help affect the body's glucose storage and eliminate fat in the liver. Another common form of inositol that has been studied is called DCI or D-chiro-inositol. DCI acts as an insulin sensitizer, controlling the action of insulin between our cells, similar to the common diabetes drug metformin. Inositol is classified as an "insulin sensitizer" compound because it affects the delivery of hormones in the body.

Inositol side effects

Because of its effects on brain hormones, inositol may not be suitable for people with mental illness who are being treated with other medications. The role of inositol in metabolism and blood sugar control may make it unsuitable for those with hypoglycemia.

Recommended dosage of inositol

Most studies of inositol for mental health use doses of 5 to 18 mg per day. The doses studied to affect insulin sensitivity were lower, ranging from 2 to 6 mg per day. Inositol is a naturally occurring substance that is not regulated by the FDA and is generally considered safe. However, if you're considering using inositol as a supplement, talk to your doctor first to help figure out the best dose for your health.

Applicable people for inositol powder

Inositol powder is an ideal nutritional supplement for those who wish to improve the health of the nervous system, as it can lead to greater concentration, and is also suitable for exercise participants who require good mental health and high concentration.

Inositol from food sources

According to the USDA, the largest food sources of inositol are organic whole grains, nuts, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, lima beans, raisins, and cabbage. The main source of inositol for infants is breast milk, which is why inositol is often added to infant formula. Milk also contains some inositol, but only 1/3 of the amount in breast milk. If you're concerned about possible side effects of inositol supplements, start by adding foods rich in inositol to your diet. Inositol is a sugar alcohol that exerts various effects on hormones that affect our brain and metabolism, earning it its reputation as a "pseudo-vitamin." The benefits of myo-inositol (in the form of Myo-inositol or DCI) may help people with poor mental health and those with problems with insulin sensitivity.
