In a dry three-necked flask, add dichloromethane (300mL), biphenyl (77.1g, 0.5mol), aluminum trichloride (3.33g, 0.025mol), and cool to 0°C.Start adding valeryl chloride (72.35g, 0.6mol) slowly and uniformly. After the addition, the reaction is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours, and then cooled to below 10°C. The reaction is quenched by dripping water, and the layer is allowed to stand.Separate the water phase, wash the organic phase twice with 50 mL of water, and concentrate the organic phase.The content of 4-pentanoyl biphenyl was determined by gas chromatography to be 98%, and the yield was 94%.
