Steps:

Synthesis of 5-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylic acid
To 250 mL round-bottomed flask, small pieces of sodium metal (17 mmol, 4 g) was dissolved in ethanol (50 mL) and acetylacetone (6 mmol, 6 g) was added slowly followed by previously prepared 4-azidobenzene (2 mmol, 3 g) in a slow manner and heated to reflux for 12 h. The reaction was monitored by thin-layer chromatography. On completion, the mixture was quenched with ice-cold HCl. An off white precipitate obtained was filtered and recrystallized using hot water. The yield was 75% M.p. 280°C (decomposed). IR (KBr): 3445 cm-1 (COOH), 2938 cm-1 (Aliphatic C-Hstr), 1692 cm-1 (C=O), 1440 cm-1 (Ar-C-C str), 1515 cm-1 (C=N str). 1H-NMR (CDCl3): 7-7.5 δ ppm (Ar, 5H), 10.9 δ ppm (COOH, 1H), 2.56 δ ppm (CH3, 3H). 13C-NMR (CDCl3): 139 (ipso), 135.9, 135.2, 130, 129, 125, 164 (C=O), 10 (CH3).
