Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1:methanol;sodium methylate;3,4,5-trifluorobenzoic acid in toluene for 6 h;Reflux;
Stage #2: with hydrogenchloride in water

Steps:

To 100 ml of toluene, 11 g of 3,4,5-trifluorobenzoic acid and 30 g of a 28% solution of sodium methoxide in methanol were added, and then the mixture was heated under reflux for 6 hours. The reaction mixture cooled to about room temperature was added into water. After washing with MTBE, the aqueous layer was extracted. The aqueous layer was acidified by addition of hydrochloric acid, extracted with ethyl acetate, and then washed sequentially with water and brine. The organic layer was dried over magnesium sulfate and then concentrated under reduced pressure, and6.0 g of 3,5-difluoro-4-methoxybenzoic acid was obtained. 3,5-Difluoro-4-methoxybenzoic acid 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 4.13 (3H, t, J = 1.7 Hz), 7.61-7.69 (2H, m), 11.47 (1H, br s).
