Place a 30 mL round-bottom flask in ice. Add 0.2 mL of arylhydrazine hydrochloride (0.5 mmol) and cyclopentyl methyl ether (CH₂Cl₂) to the mixture. Gently add 2.4 equivalents of boron bromide to the mixture. Add 0.2 mL of dimethyl sulfoxide dropwise to the mixture using a syringe. Place the mixture on a hot plate (80°C). Stir the mixture in air for 1 hour. Perform liquid extraction with CH₂Cl₂ to purify the product. Wash the product with saturated NaHCO₃. Dry the product on Na₂SO₄. Purify the product 1-bromo-2,4-dichlorobenzene (hexane 100%/hexane:EtOAc = 20:1) by column chromatography.
