Methyl 3-mercaptopropionate (6.5 g, 54 mmol) was dissolved in dichloromethane under cooling conditions in an ice bath, and chlorine was slowly passed through until the reaction solution took on a light green color. After continuing to pass the chlorine gas for 0.5 h, the reaction was purged with nitrogen to remove unreacted chlorine gas. The reaction mixture was extracted with dichloromethane, the organic phases were combined and washed with saturated brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give methyl 3-(chlorosulfonyl)propionate (9.7 g, 96% yield).
