Reddish-brown powder. Fairly water-soluble; the aqueous solution is bluish-red. Addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid produces a jujube-red precipitate, which turns orange-brown upon addition of concentrated alkali. Soluble in ethylene glycol ether, slightly soluble in ethanol, with a reddish-orange color, and insoluble in other organic solvents. Orange to brown in concentrated sulfuric acid, dilution produces a dark bluish-red precipitate. A brown solution with a precipitate is formed in concentrated nitric acid. Insoluble in concentrated alkali; jujube-red in concentrated ammonia. | [Uses]
