A mixture of PEG-NO2 (26.7%, w/w, 86 mg, 0.5 nmol, NO2-based), 12 M HCl aqueous solution (25.3 mg, 0.25 mmol), 4-MeO-TEMPO (0.093 mg, 0.0005 mmol), and benzyl alcohol (5.0 mmol) in DCE (10 mL) was attached to an O2 balloon. The mixture was stirred at 40°C until the alcohol was completely consumed. A mixture of DCE (20 mL), saturated aqueous solution of Na2SO3 (5 mL), and saturated aqueous solution of NaHCO3 (5 mL) was added. The organic layer was separated and washed with H₂O (5 mL). The solution was concentrated and evaporated to dryness to give the title compound, m-Tolualdehyde. |
