2,6-Dimethylbenzonitrile is used in weed science as a herbicide and plant growth regulator. 2,6-Dimethylbenzonitrile inhibits the growth of plants by binding to the active site of photosynthesis and inhibiting electron transport. The mechanism of action is similar to other nitriles such as acetylene. 2,6-Dimethylbenzonitrile also inhibits the production of chlorophylls, which are necessary for photosynthesis. |
