Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a polypeptide hormone released in response to atrial dilation and it stimulates diuresis, natriuresis and vasorelaxation. ANP acts as an inhibitor of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) pathway. It also has a major role in body fluid homeostasis and maintenance of blood pressure. Binding of ANP to receptors on target cell stimulate the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP). Overexpression of ANP leads to congestive heart failure in the human. Experimental studies show that ANP can be used as a therapeutic for stimulating angiogenesis in ischemic tissues. N-terminal ANP prohormone functions as a biomarker for asymptomatic systolic left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, congestive heart failure and cardiovascular mortality. |
