The Michelia genus consists of approximately 45 species of evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees distributed in
southeast Asia. M. alba has small, white, very fragrant flowers with leaves similar to avocado. This fast-growing shade tree is popular
in China, where it is used as a containerized plant or shade tree. It blooms during warm weather and is a member of the magnolia
family. It is related to the banana shrub, M. fuscata. The flowers have been used to add a pleasing aromatic note to tea | [Chemical Properties]
The oil is prepared by water distillation, steam distillation or organic solvent extraction. The oil yield is generally 0.78
to 1.12% (v/w dry material). Only water distillation and steam distillation products are free from the reddish tinge of other extracted

Medicinal Uses: Magnolia flower oil has a strong ability to scavenge free radicals. When the mass concentration reaches 20 μg/mL, the removal rate is comparable to that of ascorbic acid. Magnolia flower essential oil contains abundant terpenoid oxides and terpenoid compounds, such as linalool (11.06%), citronellol (9.94%), eucalyptol (3.95%), caryophyllene (37.94%), and β-pinene (2.67%). These compounds containing methylene and hydroxyl groups are chemically active and easily oxidized, giving the essential oil its antioxidant activity. The easily oxidized nature of the essential oil requires it to be stored in a brown bottle, protected from light, at a low temperature, and sealed. Otherwise, the aroma-enhancing, antioxidant, and antibacterial active ingredients are easily destroyed. Magnolia flower essential oil has an inhibitory effect on bacteria and fungi, especially on red yeast. When the essential oil mass concentration in the culture medium is 5.00 mg/mL, it can completely inhibit the growth of red yeast in the culture medium. Red yeast is widely distributed in nature and is one of the microorganisms that cause food spoilage, especially easily causing spoilage of foods with high sugar content. Magnolia flower essential oil can be used in the food industry not only as a flavoring agent but also as a preservative. Therefore, magnolia flower essential oil has certain development and utilization value. |
