The residue was partitioned between dichloromethane and saturated aqueous sodium chloride. 8. The organic layer was separated and washed twice with saturated aqueous sodium chloride. 9. The organic phases were combined and concentrated under reduced pressure to give diethyl 2-(2-bromo-4-nitrophenyl)-2-methylmalonate (8.4 g, 99% yield) as a light yellow oil, which can be used directly in the next step of the reaction. 10. It was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a retention time of 1.86 min.
