Beschreibung

This alkaloid has been isolated from Strychnos holstii var. reticulata f. condensata and may be purified by recrystallization from AcOEt or heptane when it yields clusters of colourless needles. It is dextrorotatory with [α]D + 23° (c 0.7, MeOH) and gives an ultraviolet spectrum which exhibits a single absorption maximum at 254.4 mIJ.. It is only sparingly soluble in heptane or Et20, more so in C6H6 and freely soluble in MeOH, EtOH, Me2CO or CHC13. The alkaloid has been synthesized via the lactam produced from strychnine or the WielandGumlich aldehyde.
