Description | Bisphenol is an important chemical product that consists of three main compounds: bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF). Bisphenols are widely used in the production of a variety of everyday household products. Its BPA is used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastic, a clear and rigid plastic used in the manufacture of water dispensers, food storage containers and reusable beverage bottles. | Uses | Bisphenol analogues (BPA) are mainly used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics such as baby bottles, reusable water bottles, food containers, water cans, cutlery and other storage containers. BPA is also used in the manufacture of epoxy resins. Epoxy liners are coated on the inside of metal products such as food cans, bottle caps and water supply lines. The purpose of the epoxy resin lining is to prevent the can material from corroding or reacting with food. | Hazard | Studies have shown that BPA is toxic, endocrine disrupting and possibly carcinogenic. It can leach into food or beverages from containers made with BPA. It may have health effects on the brain and prostate of foetuses, infants and children. It can also affect children's behaviour. Other studies have shown a possible link between BPA and elevated blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. |
