定義本品は、バルサムモミ Abies balsamea から得られる樹脂である。
溶解性キシレンおよびトルエンに極めて溶けやすく、エタノールに溶けにくく、水にほとんど溶けない。
解説

カナダバルサム，カナダで産するマツ科の植物の樹脂から得られるバルサム．黄色透明で芳香性の粘ちゅうな液体．d1.519～1.526でガラスの値に近い．主成分はカナデン酸，カナデノール酸．医薬品，光学器械のガラス接合などに用いられる．天然樹脂の一つ。バルサムモミ（マツ科）の樹皮より浸出する淡黄〜黄緑色の透明な粘稠(ねんちゅう)性液体。芳香があり，空気中で徐々に透明な塗膜をつくる。屈折率がガラスに近いため光学器械のレンズの接合剤などに使用。また，芳香性のあるところから，香油，香膏として皮膚病の治療にも使われる。主産地はカナダのケベック州。
