1-ethyl-3 -(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (also known as EDC, EDAC, or EDCI) is a water-soluble carbodiimide, often in the form of a hydrochloride. Its pH range is usually 4.0-6.0. EDC is often used as a carboxyl activator in the preparation of amines from primary amines. EDC can also be used to activate phosphate groups. This carbodiimide is commonly used in peptide synthesis; Cross-linking of protein and nucleic acid and preparation of immune conjugate. EDC is often used in combination with n-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) or sulfonation-NHS to increase the efficiency of the coupling reaction. In organic chemistry, EDC is often used in combination with DMAP as an esterification reagent for carboxylic acids and alcohols.
