Dihydroxypropylline, also known as chuan di, whose chemical name is 1, 3-dimethyl-7 -(2,3 dihydroxypropyl)-3, 7-dihydro-1h-purine-2, 6-dione, is a commonly used asthma drug in clinic. It is a xanthine derivative of the condensation of theophylline and monochlorodipropanol. Its antiasthmatic effect is similar to that of aminophylline and its bronchodilating effect is about 1/10 of that of aminophylline. The cardiac excitatory effect was only 1/20 ~ 1/10 that of aminophylline. The intramuscular injection of this product has little pain response, and oral administration has little stimulation to the gastrointestinal tract. Oral bioavailability is 70% and half-life is about 2 hours. In the body does not metabolize, most of the original shape with urine excretion. Clinical use for bronchial asthma, asthmatic bronchitis, obstructive emphysema and other wheezing symptoms relief. It can also be used for cardiogenic asthma, especially for asthma patients with tachycardia and intolerance to theophylline.

This product and aminophylline belong to the same class of xanthine bronchodilator, suitable for the treatment of bronchial asthma, asthmatic bronchitis and chronic emphysema, can also be used for the prevention of bronchial asthma attack, can also be used for the treatment of angina and cardiac edema. Theophylline is a representative variety of xanthine drugs. In order to improve the solubility of theophylline, aminophylline (double salt of theophylline and ethylenediamine), cholophylline (double salt of theophylline and choline), dihydroxypropyl theophylline (n-7 derivative of theophylline) were developed. Dihydroxypropylophylline is more water-soluble than aminophylline, but less effective than aminophylline, and its toxicity is about 1/5 of aminophylline. Rat oral LD50 was 3400 mg/kg.
