5-aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is mainly used as a substrate for 5-aminolevulinic acid dehydrogenase, biochemical research.

Usage: 

5-aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride is a natural amino acid; As a precursor of tetrapyrrole for chlorophyll and heme biosynthesis; Antitumor agents (photosensitizers).

In vitro studies: 

5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) -Photodynamic therapy (PDT) leads to downregulation of nuclear factor κB (NFkappaB) and baculoviruses containing inhibitors of -3 (BIRC-3) protein duplication. 5-Aminolevulinicacid (5-ALA) -Photodynamic therapy (PDT) leads to increased Bax expression: Bcl-2 ratio and mitochondrial release of cytochrome c and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF). 5-aminolevulinic acid leads to metal-catalyzed oxidation of reactive oxygen species, leading to damage of rat liver mitochondria and DNA damage in vivo and in vitro. 

5- Aminolevulinicacid dose-dependent induced nuclear and mitochondrial DNA damage in human SVNF fibroblasts and rat PC12 cells. 5-aminolevulinic acid reduced cAMP levels in a dose-dependent way (maximum inhibition was 38% at 1mM) due to inhibition of basaladenylate cyclase activity. 5-Aminolevulinicacid also inhibits adenylate cyclase activity stimulated by fluoride- and Gpp(NH)p, but not by forskolin. 5-aminolevulinic acid also inhibited adenylate cyclase activity in the rat cortex and in the membrane separated from the striatum and human cortex. 

5-aminolevulinic acid (0-3 mm) dose-dependent inhibition of glutamate uptake by astrocytes. 5-Aminolevulinicacid significantly reduces glutamate uptake of K (m) and V(max), indicating non-competitive inhibition. In cultured astrocytes under these conditions, 5-aminolevulinic acid significantly increased lipid peroxidation in astrocytes. 5-Aminolevulinicacid mediated sonodynamic therapy demonstrated synergistic apoptotic effects in THP-1 macrophages, involving excessive intracellular reactive oxygen species production and MMP loss.
