It is an alcohol derivative of neopentane or C(CH3)4. It is a resinous crystalline solid that does not burn as easily as other alcohols, but it has a strong stimulus and should be used with extreme caution. It can be combined with bromine to form tribromo-neopentyl alcohol, which is used as a raw material for synthetic resin flame retardants.
