1-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)ethanone (2.33g, 15mM) was dissolved in MeOH (100ml_) with stirring under a nitrogen atmosphere and the solution was cooled to around 0-5°C. Sodium borohydride (567mg, 15mM) was added in two portions over 5 minutes. The reaction mixture was stirred in the cold for 2 hours then allowed to warm to 10°C. Water (2ml_) was slowly added, then 80ml_ of the solvent was evaporated. The mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (30ml) and the organic phase separated. The aqueous was further extracted with ethyl acetate (20ml) and the organic extracts combined, washed with water (10ml), dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and the filtrate evaporated giving 1-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)ethanol as a pale yellow oil (2.46g, quantitative yield). H NMR (CDCI3): δ 8.31 (d, 1 H); 7.37 (d, 1 H); 7.21 (dd, 1 H); 4.91 (dq, 1 H); 2.43 (d, 1 H); 1.50 (d, 3H)
