42a. 4-Piperazinylbenzenecarboonitrile 4-Fluorobenzonitrile (15.87 g, 0.131 mol), potassium carbonate (90.55 g, 0.655 mol) and piperazine (33.8 g, 0.393 mol) were slurried together in dry toluene (250 mL). The resulting mixture was heated to reflux for 3 days, cooled to ambient temperature, diluted with ethyl acetate. The reaction mixture was washed with water (3*), brine and then extracted with ethyl acetate (2*). The combined organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and the solvent removed in vacuo to give the title product (21.8 g, 89%) as an off-white solid: 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ7.48 (m, 2H), 6.85 (m, 2H), 3.27 (m, 4H), 3.00 (m, 4H), 1.67 (s, 1H).
