5) Production of 1-(3-isopropoxyphenyl)-2-propanol To a solution of (3-isopropoxyphenyl)acetaldehyde (116.6 mg) in tetrahydrofuran (1 ml), 1.0 ml of methyllithium was added under ice-cooling, and the reaction solution was stirred at the same temperature for 1 hour. The reaction solution was diluted with a saturated aqueous ammonium chloride solution, extracted with ethyl acetate and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and the residual residue was purified by preparative thin layer chromatography (Kieselgel 60 F254, Art. 5744, made by Merck & Co.; ethyl acetate/hexane (30:70)) to yield the title compound as a colorless oil.
