Steps:

Method A.

General procedure: A cooled solution of PhLi in Et2O/cyclohexane (74/26 v/v) (0.42 M, 0.75 mL, T oC) was added dropwisefor 3.0 min using a glass syringe to a solution of 4-formylbenzaldehyde (1) in THF (0.10 M, 3.0 mL, a 50 mL roundbottom glass flask with a magnetic stirrer) at T oC. After being stirred for 10 min at T oC, sat. aqueous NH4Cl solution(2.0 mL) was added and a cooling bath was removed. The conversion of 4-formylbenzaldehyde (1) and the yieldsof 4-(hydroxy(phenyl)methyl)benzaldehyde (2), and 1,4-phenylenebis(phenylmethanol) (3) were determined by GCanalysis using an internal standard (dodecane). The results are summarized in Table S1.
